Hello all,

I propose to hold the next Memory Friday meeting on the upcoming 28th November 2025, at noon (12p.m.).

Some issues to discuss:

Future: IT development to detect duplicates considering several criteria. In first place, internally, to detect duplicates that already exists in Dédalo (maybe an IA?). Sacondly, we promote research that is returned usually in spreadsheets (excel) and depending on the volume can be a nightmare to detect if a person is already in dédalo. Discuss things to be considered in such development.
Family: some tests, some doubts.
People that are cited in publications. How to indicate that a person is cited in a publication whan importing? (a sort of onomastic index, we use description) . This is related to create a project "pending" and that that project is assigned by default instead of the actual register.

Regarding the issues detecting duplicates, one idea I'd like to share is the possibility when creating a new person, it would detect if there is a possible duplicate.
The idea comes in how it works when cataloguing books:

Search for the book in the catalogue (ISBN, author, title...) --> search for the person
Not found so you create the new record --> create new person
Save the new record. Before saving a screen appears saying that it may be a duplicate so you check them and decide whether it is or not. --> detects possible duplicates as there is a person with the same surname but name in catalan? or same surname and place of birth (we should decide which are the paramenters)

We've some proposals that we would like to discuss with you tomorrow morning:

First of all, we need a solution for those cases in which the records provide us with the gender of the victims' children, but not their names.

Secondly, regarding the field of family units, we propose associating a time frame for each one, same as adding a field for observations.

Summary of last meeting:

In the last meeting, we primarily discussed the new family group that is implemented on PRE.

FAMILY GROUP

We agreed to add a range of dates to each family group, which is especially useful when someone remarries.

We discussed where to inform about unstructured information that we do not want to lose, like someone that has two children – a girl and a boy – but we don’t know their names. We agreed to put that information in the textual field where we put the names right now.

We examined the new family group and discovered a few problems, such as:

When we see the group in the person record, it is not evident which are the different roles.
When we have more than one family group, it is confusing to know who is who.

To solve this, we could do the following:

1.       Change the literals to siblings instead of children.
2.       Display the roles
3.       Figure out how to visualise the person in the group (in the image in green) as bolded text, highlighted, etc. This requires specific development, so it is a more complicated solution.

We agreed on the following:

To avoid making things more complicated, we can now attempt to employ just one family group.
Roles will be added in this visualisation.
We postpone the specific visualisation for the future.

We also introduced briefly the need for a development to make importation of people more easy as it takes a lot of resources for not repeating them on the database. It is a recurrent problem for all projects and it is not easy to solve. It is very important to define criteria.

Lastly @Alex announced that a new Dedalian conference focussed on Memory projects is being prepared fot the next 14th-15th May 2026. Save the date!!!
